FAQs

All the fine print!

What does an independent educational consultant (IEC) actually do?

An IEC guides families through the entire college planning process — from building a school list and exploring majors to supporting applications, essays, and financial fit decisions. Unlike a school counselor who may work with hundreds of students simultaneously, Kendall Guess works with a very limited number of families at a time (10–12 students per graduating class) so that every student gets real, individualized attention. The goal isn't just college acceptance — it's helping your student move into young adulthood feeling confident and excited about where they're going.

What is a Certified Educational Planner (CEP) and why should you care?

The CEP credential is awarded by the American Institute of Certified Educational Planners (AICEP) and is the highest professional certification available to independent educational consultants in the United States. Earning it requires personally visiting over 100 college campuses, completing continuing education requirements, and passing a rigorous peer review process. I am one of approximately 18 CEPs in the entire state of Texas and one of roughly 272 in the country. When you hire a CEP, you're working with someone who has done the legwork — on campuses, in admissions offices — not just someone who reads about schools online.

How is working with Path to Admissions different than your school counselor?

School counselors do important work, but they typically serve very large student populations and have limited time to spend with any individual student on college planning. I work with a deliberately small number of families each year so she can give each student real attention — learning who they are, what drives them, and what kind of college environment they will actually thrive in. I bring deep familiarity with hundreds of universities from personal campus visits, and am current on admission trends, testing policy changes, and financial aid strategies.

When should my student start working with Path to Admissions?

The earlier, the better.  Kendall Guess accepts students as early as the end of freshman year. Starting early allows time for course planning conversations, extracurricular and passion project development, and building a thoughtful school list without the pressure of looming deadlines. That said, juniors and seniors can absolutely still benefit. If I have the space availability, I am always willing to work with a later arrival. If you're unsure where your student stands, the best first step is a free new family meeting.

Do you work with students outside Texas?

Yes. All meetings are held virtually via Zoom, which means Mrs. G can work with families anywhere. That said, her practice is based  in the Austin metro area, and she has particular depth of experience with Texas schools including UT Austin, Texas A&M, and many others across the state.

Can Path to Admissions guarantee admissions into a school?

No, and any consultant who tells you otherwise is misleading you. Admission decisions are made by universities, not consultants. What I can do is help your student put together the strongest, most authentic application possible — and help your family build a school list with a realistic range of options so that wherever your student is admitted, it's a school they're genuinely excited to attend.

What are the payment options?

For the Seminars & Workshops package, payment is expected upfront. For the comprehensive package, I ask for a deposit of $2,000 at enrollment, with the final payment due by May of the student's junior year. After that point, all payments must be made upfront. Packages are non refundable. Payment plans and questions about fees can be discussed directly with Mrs. G.

How will meetings work?

All client meetings are held virtually via Zoom. Students should log in from a laptop or desktop — sessions involve screen sharing and working directly in documents together.
